1. SMI Demonstration Project

A Seminar titled “Environmental and Commercial Success of SMIs” was held on the 6th August 1997 at the Concord Hotel Shah Alam. It was sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and co-organised by BCSDM and Malaysian Metal Finishing Society (MMFS).

Speakers for the seminar were:

  1. Mr. Chong Kok Seng, President of MMFS and Managing Director of BI-PMB Waste Management Sdn Bhd
  2. En Jeffrey Ismail, Deputy Manager, Manufacturing Department, Credit Division of Bank Industy.
Participants also paid a visit to the premise of Kilang Sadur Letrik Quality Sdn Bhd, specifically to view its waste water treatment facility. Most of the participants were from the electro-plating industry and BCSDM’s aim was to increase these electro – platers’ awareness to the benefit of the waste water treatment and clean technology in electroplating.

2. Environmental Management System Seminar

With a view of encouraging companies to put into place environmental management system BCSDM organized a series of seminars and study visits to see sound environmental practices in action. The first of these half-day seminars was held on 28th November 1997 at the Pan Pacific Glenmarie Hotel Shah Alam. The speakers were:

  1. Mr Rajinder Raj, General Manager SIRIM QAS Sdn Bhd, who spoke on “Impact of the ISO 14000 Environmental Management Standards and Environmental Management System Certification in Malaysia”
  2. Mr Tan Ging Tuang, Chief Environmental Advisor, Shell Malaysia Ltd who spoke on “An Industry Experience in Obtaining MS ISO 14001 EMS Certification”
3.Hibiscus Award

The Hibiscus Award is jointly organized by four of Malaysia’s leading private sector non-profit organisations concerned with corporate environmental issues, namely Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSDM), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers of Malaysia (FMM), Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia (ENSEARCH), and Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI). In 1997 the Award was open for participation in four industries, the food and beverage, textile, paper and pulp and hotels and resorts.

The presentation ceremony was held on 4th December 1997 at the Pan Pacific Glenmarie Hotel Shah Alam. It was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology & the Environment YB Datuk Law Hieng Ding. Nestle Foods (M) Sdn Bhd of Raja Muda Factory Shah Alam and Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort Penang were the joint winners of the Hibiscus Award.
