1. Environmental Management Systems Seminar

The second seminar on EMS was held on 6th March 1998 at the Pan Pacific Glenmarie Hotel Shah Alam. The speakers were:

  1. Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Group Engineer, Services & Environment, Nestle Foods (M) Sdn Bhd. He spoke on “The Nestle Environmental Management System: Experience and Achievements”
  2. Dr. Chong Hock Guan, CEO and Principal Consultant GMP Environmental Consultants in Malaysia. He spoke on “The Road Map Towards ISO 14001 Development”

2. Roundtable Discussion on Life Cycle Assessment – “A tool for Environment Management”

In line with its strategy to promote the adoption of environmental management systems and tools by business and industry, BCSDM organized a Roundtable Discussion on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on 17th April 1998 at Sime Darby Kuala Lumpur. The objectives of the Roundtable were to solicit views on issues, concerns and challenges over the application of life cycle assessment standards and methodology in developing countries. Three background papers were presented by:

  1. Mr Khor Yee Kwang, Assistant General Manager, Sony Electronics (M) S/B
  2. Ms Malini Pemalatha, NSC5 Secretariat of SIRIM Berhad
  3. Mr. Peck Thiam Guan, Deputy Director of Environmental Technology Centre of Singapore Productivity and Standards Board.
3. Study Visit to Putrajaya and Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Serdang Power Station

BCSDM organized its first study visit on the 21st April 1998 to Putrajaya, which is the Federal Government’s new Administrative Centre and is the first intelligent garden city in Malaysia and to Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Serdang Power Station, which is an ISO 14001 certified company.

The objective of the visit was to see the environmental aspects of the development of Putrajaya and to learn TNB’s experience on the implementation of the ISO 14001 EMS in a power station.

4. Seminar on “Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development”

BCSDM co-organized a seminar on Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development with the WBCSD on 10th June 1998. It focused on central issues of the trade and sustainable development debate, and how they link to business. The main aim was to help participants identify win-win strategies for meeting the new challenges businesses face at a time on increasing trade liberalization and growing concern about sustainable development.

Two experts delivered the core programme:

  1. Mr. Matthew Stilwell of the Centre for International Environmental Law.”
  2. Mr. Howard Mann, an independent specialist in International Trade and Environmental Law
  3. They were joined by Mr. Marcel Engel who manages the WBCSD’s regional network programme.
  4. And a local expert Dr. Mohd Haflah Piei, Deputy Director of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) who provided national input on some key issues.
5. ISO 14001 – TC 207

In conjunction with the launch of the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award on 3rd August 1998, a briefing on the latest development on the ISO 14000 series standards, arising from the recent ISO TC207 meetings in San Francisco in June was presented by three participants who attended the meetings in San Francisco.

6. Environmental Management Systems Seminar

In recognizing the need for businesses and industries to take a proactive and holistic approach towards protection of the environment, and promotion of sustainable development, BCSDM organized a seminar on “Environmental Auditing” on 29th October 1999. Two expert speakers shared their experiences.

  1. Dato’ Dr. A Bakar Jaafar, Managing Director of Alam Sekitar Malaysia Sdn Bhd, who gave an overview on the ISO TC207 Meeting
  2. Mr. Tan Ging Tuang, Safety & Environment Adviser of Shell Malaysia Ltd and
  3. Mr. Chew Seng Choon, Group Manager, Environment & Safety of Sime Darby Berhad
Mr. Tan & Mr Chew gave a feedback on ISO TC207 Meeting in San Francisco and the impact to the businesses and industries.
