1. Seminar Occupational Safety, Health & Environment

BCSDM organized a full day seminar on “Occupational Safety, Health & Environment – Challenges for the Millennium” on 24th February 2000. This seminar was officiated by YB Datuk Law Hieng Ding, Minister of Science, Technology & the Environment and Patron of BCSDM.

Six experts in their own field presented papers.

  1. Ir Chan Mun Chow from DOSH and he spoke on “ Promoting Occupational Safety, Health Through Self-Regulation”
  2. En. Mohd Said Hassan, Principal Assistant Director, SOCSO and his presentation was on “ Role of SOCSO in OSH Awareness and SOCSO Benefits”
  3. Dr. Fatanah Ismail, Ministry of Health and he spoke on “Occupational Health Monitoring Control”
  4. En. Hashim Daud from DOE spoke on “Environmental Control and Monitoring”
  5. Professor Dr. Krishna Gopal Rampai gave a presentation on “Safety, Health & Environment Risk Communication”
  6. 6. Dr. Tong Soo Long from ASMA gave a presentation on “Air Pollution Control”
This seminar was very successful and it was sponsored by SOCSO.

2. Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award was opened to all categories to participate and it attracted 39 companies. The winner of the Challenge Trophy was Fairchild Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

3. Study Visit

BCSDM organized a study visit on 27th June to the Oil Palm Research Station, Golden Hope Plantations Berhad Banting. This visit was very informative and an eye opener. The members got to see the following:

  1. the practice of zero-burning for oil palm cultivation
  2. the use of integrated pest management in oil palms
  3. maximizing the utilization of the biomass of the palm oil
  4. adoption of the ISO 14001 environment management system in oil mills
  5. adoption of the environment impact assessment (EIA) in an oil palm plantation development.

Members were very impressed with the visit and enjoyed the lunch provided by Golden Hope Plantations Berhad.

4. National Conference & Exhibition

BCSDM together with WBCSD organized a National Conference and Exhibition on “Making Sustainability a Business Opportunity” on 6th July 2000. There were seven papers presented by experts from:

  1. Ir Tuan Haji Abu Bakar Che Man, DG Dept. of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) on “ Environmental Safety & Health in the New Millennium”
  2. Mr. Marcel Engel Programme Manager WBCSD Regional Network, Geneva Switzerland spoke on “Challenges of Sustainability for Business”
  3. Mr. Claude Fussler, Director for External Relations, WBCSD Geneva Switzerland spoke on “Making Sustainability a Business opportunity”
  4. Mr. Peter Wentworth, CEO BP Malaysia spoke on “Industry Cares: A brief Commentary on The Oil Industry’s Role in Environmental Protection in Malaysia”
  5. Mr John Lintjer, Vice President, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Manila Philippines spoke on “Asian Development Bank’s Approach on Sustainability”
  6. En Khairudin Hashim, Group Quality & Environmental Manager, Golden Hope Plantations Berhad spoke on “ Industry Cares: A Brief Commentary of Plantations’ Role in Sustainable Development In Malaysia”
  7. Puan Hajah Rosnani Ibarahim, DG DOE spoke on “Sustainability By EIA’s: Where The Industries Are Now”
Y. Bhg. Dato’ Kok Wee Kiat, Hon President of BCSDM chaired the morning session, and
Ir Dr. Johari Basri Executive Director, National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) chaired the afternoon session.

Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Razali Ismail, special advisor to the Prime Minister delivered the closing address.

This conference was very successful and the participants were very impressed with the quality of the speakers and the overall arrangements.

5. BCSDM Gala Night

In conjunction with the National Conference BCSDM organized a Gala Night on the 6th July 2002. There was lots of fun and entertainment was from the Instant Café and our very own band the “Bayer Boys”. Member companies donated all the prizes for lucky draw.

It was another very successful fund raising event.

6. ISO 14001

BCSDM is organizing a series of workshops on “Improving Profit of SMIs through ISO 14001” in major towns of Malaysia. The workshops were sponsored by DOE and supported by SIRIM and SMIDEC. BCSDM has identified the need to raise the level of awareness and provide a process that can lead to certification for interested small & medium industries.

The first of this series of workshops was held on the 9th August 2000 at the Sunway Hotel Seberang Prai, Penang. The workshop was officiated by President of BCSDM Y.Bhg.Datuk Lim Haw Kuang. The speakers were:

  1. En Aziz Long, Senior Manager SIRIM QAS – “Benefits of ISO 14001”
  2. En Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff, member of BCSDM – “Overview of 14001
  3. Mr. Tan Kheng Huat, Senior Manager, Sony Electronics.- “Practical Experience of assisting SMIs to Achieve ISO 14001”
  4. Mr. Michael Ooi, Finance & Admin Manager, San Yong Enterprise Sdn Bhd.- “SMI’s Experience with ISO 14001”
  5. En. Fozian Ismail, SMIDEC – “Financial Assistance for SMIs”

There was a handshake with Motorola Penang and BCSDM as Motorola was adopting two SMIs – Bakti Comintel Sdn Bhd and COB Technology Sdn Bhd.

The workshop had an over whelming response.

7. ISO 14001

The second workshop for SMIs was conducted in Miri, Sarawak on the 30th August 2000 at the Dynasty Hotel. The speakers and the topic were the same as the workshop at Prai Penang.

Sarawak Shell Berhad adopted MHS Aviation Sdn Bhd to assist in achieving the ISO 14001 certification. It was another successful event.

8. Seminar on Occupational Safety, Health & the Environment.

BCSDM organized a seminar on “Update on the Challenges of Health, Safety & Environment in Malaysia” at Pasir Gudang, Johor on the 28th September 2000 at the Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Puan Halimah Bte Mohames Sadique a representative from Johor State EXCO.

The speakers and topics were:

  1. En. Daud Suleiman Director of Dept. of Occupational Safety & Health, Johor and he spoke on “Promoting Occupational Safety & Health Through Self Regulation”
  2. En. Mohd Fuad Bin Md Ridzuan, Director of SOCSO, Johor and he spoke on “Role of SOCSO in OSH & SOCSO’s Benefits”
  3. YM Tengku Bakri Shah, Director of Dept of Environment, Johor and he spoke on “Environmental Management & Monitoring at Workplace”
  4. En. Yahaya Abas, Manager Complex Safety, Health & Environment, Titan Group Johor, and he spoke on “HSE Management System”
  5. Dr. Ku Yusoff Bin Engku Ismail, Chief Asst. Director Health Dept. Johor. And he spoke on “Occupational Health & Environmental Monitoring Control at Workplace”

The sessions were chaired by Tuan Hj. Abdul Rashid Bin Salleh, General Manager Human Resources, Johor Port Berhad.

9. ISO 14001

The third workshop for SMIs on “Improving Profits of SMIs Through ISO 14001” was held on the 23rd October 2000 in conjunction with the environment week at Subang Sheraton Hotel. The workshop was officiated by Puan Hajah Rosnani Ibarahim, DG. DOE. The speakers were”

  1. En. Aziz Long, Senior Manager, EMS Certification Unit, SIRIM QAS, and his topic was “Benefits of ISO 14001”
  2. Mr Chew Seng Choon, Chairman EMS Sub-Committee BCSDM and he spoke on “Overview of ISO 14001”
  3. Mr. Tan Kheng Huat, Senior Manager Sony and he spoke on “Practical Experience of Assisting SMIs to Achieve ISO 14001 Certification”
  4. Mr. Michael Ooi, Finance & Admin Manager, San Yong Enterprise and his topic was “SMI’s Experience with ISO 14001”

10. A Dialogue on “Sustainable Water Management”

BCSDM and WBCSD Jointly organized a dialogue on “Sustainable Water Management” on 15th November 2000 at Shangri-La Hotel KL.

The objective of the dialogue was to explore how public-private partnerships (PPPs) could contribute to better management, more efficient use and more equitable distribution of water. The Deputy Minister of Works YB En. Mohd Khaled Nordin delivered the Keynote Address and the President of BCSDM Datuk Lim Haw Kuang delivered the Welcome Address and Mr. Marcel Engel of WBCSD talked on “Objectives of Water Management Dialogue”.

The speakers were:

  1. Mr V. Subramaniam, Deputy Director, Water Works Department and he spoke on “Water Policy”
  2. Dr. Md Ghzaly Bin Shaaban, University Malaya-Public Health & Env. Engr. and he spoke on “Sustainable Water Management”
  3. Mr George Pio Lopez from FOMCA and he spoke on “Malaysian Perspective Towards Sustainable Water Management”
  4. Ir. Mohd Adnan Mohd Nor – IEM spoke on “A legal Review of Water Law & Regulations”
  5. Mr Al Fry, WBCSD spoke on “The Potential Role of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
  6. Ms Jiggy Lloyd- Severn Trent spoke on “Models of Public Private Partnerships”
  7. Ir. Lee Miang Koi, Puncak Niaga spoke on “Practical Experience of a Labour Union Towards Sustainable Water Management”
  8. Mr. Sivanathan MTUC spoke on “ Practical Experience of Public Sector Water Supplier Towards Sustainable Water Management”
  9. Mr. Dragan Hranisavlljevic, Astran, Lyonnaise Des Eaux spoke on “Practical Experiences of a Private Sector Operator Towards Sustainable Water Management”

The morning session was chaired by Mr. Lawrence Chan, EXCO Member BCSDM and the afternoon session was chaired by Mr Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff, EMS Sub- Committee Member BCSDM.
