1. BCSDM Carnical at Forest Research Institute Malaysia

The Publicity Fund Raising Sub-Committee organized a Fund Raising Carnival at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) on Sunday 22nd April 2001 from 7.00am – 1.00pm.

The Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment, and Patron of BCSDM YB Dato’ Seri Law Hieng Ding graced the occasion and presented the prizes to the winners of the various games.

Shell Malaysia had sponsored 30 children from the spastic centre and Nestle Malaysia sponsored 30 from the Pure Life Society. The children had a great time.

The hot air balloon ride was a favourite and all present enjoyed all the various games and activities, even though the weather did not cooperate with us.

2. EMS Study visit to Nestle

With a view of encouraging companies to put into place environmental management systems (EMS) the EMS Sub-Committee organised a study visit to Nestle Foods Malaysia, Shah Alam on the 27th May 2001 to see how Environmental Management System is implemented, with particular focus on Waste Water Treatment and a tour of the Coffee Grounds Boiler.

There were 37 participants and it was an educational visit and all present were impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff in working towards sustainable development.

3. Workshop on ISO 14001

In the series of workshops on ISO 14001 for the SMIs towards achieving ISO 14001 certification, BCSDM organized its 4th workshop in Kuantan, Pahang on the 17th August 2001 at the Hyatt Regency Kuantan. The speakers were:

  1. En Aziz Long, Senior Manager, EMS Certification Unit, SIRIM QAS. He presented a paper on “Benefits of ISO 14001”.
  2. En Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff, Member of BCSDM presented a paper on “Overview of ISO 14001:
  3. Mr Ong Ewe Lee, Assistant Manager SONY, presented a paper on “Practical Experience of Assisting SMIs to Achieve ISO 14001”
  4. Mr Michael Ooi, Finance & Admin Manager, San Yong Enterprise presented a paper on “SMIs Experience with ISO 14001”
  5. Cik Mimi Razidah, Manager, Transportation SMIDEC presented a paper on “Financial Assistance for SMIs”.

Dato’ Kok Wee Kiat, Honorary President BCSDM delivered the opening address and
En S Veerasingam, ED BCSDM did the closing address.

4. Workshop – “Improving Profits of SMIs through ISO 14001”

The fifth of the series of ISO14001 workshop for SMIs towards achieving ISO14001 certification was held at Crystal Crown Hotel Johor Baru on the 31st July 2001.

The speakers were the same as the previous workshop, except Cik Mimi Razidah was replaced by Cik Noor Azilah, Manager Resource, SMIDEC.

5. Workshop on ISO 14001

The last of the series of workshops on “Improving Profits of SMIs Through ISO 14001” was held at Renaissance Hotel, Melaka on 14th August 2001.

It was another successful workshop.

There were only 20 participants and they interacted very well and showed interest in going for the ISO 14001 certification.

6. WBCSD – Liasion Delegates Meeting

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) headquartered in Geneva to which Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSDM) is a working partner, held its Liaison Delegates Meeting (LDM) at the Renaissance Hotel KL from 12 – 14 September 2001. This was the first time that the LDM was held in Asia and we were very proud that Malaysia was selected to host this important event.

BCSDM organized a half-day event on the 12th September on “ Business Working in Partnership With Communities – A Malaysian Perspective On Sustainable Development”. The President of BCSDM Y.Bhg Datuk Lim Haw Kuang delivered the welcome address and the President of WBCSD delivered his opening address.

The sessions were co-chaired by Y. Bhg. Dato’ Kok Wee Kiat from BCSDM and Mr Al Fry from WBCSD. Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Clifford F Herbert, Chairman Percetakan Nasional Malaysia delivered the keynote paper on “ Malaysia’s Journey Towards Sustainability”.

The speakers were:

  1. Dr Ramadasan Krishnan, Director of Forests For Water – Water For Life Programme, presented a paper on “Sustainable Water Development”.
  2. En Samsudin Musa, Forest Research Institute Malaysia, spoke on “Sustainable Forest Management”
  3. Mr Chow Kok Kee, Director General, Meteorological Departmant, spoke on “Energy & Climate Change”
  4. Mr Lum Kok Liang, Project Coordinator, Local Agenda 21, Ministry of Housing & Local Government, spoke on “Sustainable Community & Local Agenda 21 in Malaysia”

This was a very successful event and the delegates were very impressed.

7. WBCSD Liasion Delegates Dinner at Carcosa

In conjunction with the Liasion Delegates Meeting, BCSDM together with WBCSD organized a dinner at Carcosa Seri Negara with YB Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi the Deputy Prime Minister as the Guest of Honour.

There were about 300 people who attended this very enjoyable dinner. There were many varieties of stall food and a cultural show was presented, which was a great success and all the guests went home with either a scarf or a batik sarong as gifts from BCSDM.

The dinner was partly sponsored by WBCSD.

8. Workshop on Safety and Health

BCSDM organized a workshop on “Effective OSH Leadership – In The New Millennium” on the 27th September 2001 at the Hyatt Saujana Subang.

Ir Harminder Singh, former DG DOSH chaired the sessions. The speakers were:

  1. Ir Tuan Hj Abu Bakar Che Man, Director General, DOSH presented a paper on “ Current Issues in Occupational Safety & Health in the Country”.
  2. Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz, Medical Director SOCSO presented a paper on “ SOCSO’s Perspective on Occupational Safety & Health”
  3. Dr Mohd Zam Zam Jaafar, Chief Executive Officer, Pusat Tenaga Malaysia presented a paper on “Energy Efficiency in Malaysia”
  4. Dr Abu Hasan Samad Medical Advisor / Manager, Medicine & Occupational Health ExxonMobil spoke on “Stress Management In The Workplace”
  5. Mr. Thomas Wong, General Manager, Optimal Group of Companies, Trengganu, spoke on “ Challenges Facing Leaders In Implementing HSE Effectively”
  6. Mr. M.P. Sivapalan, Head Road Safety Academy Shell Malaysia Presented a paper on “The Challenges of Road Transport Safety Management”

This was another successful seminar and it was sponsored by SOCSO.
