1. Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award is co-organized by BCSDM, ENSEARCH, FMM & MICCI. This year it attracted 34 companies to participate for the Award. After the first stage of assessment was completed, only 20 participants reached the stage two assessment.

There was a signing ceremony on 9th January with TV3 appointing them as the Media Partner of the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award. A representative each from BCSDM, ENSEARCH & MICCI were interview on Money Matters on TV3 on 12th January 2002.

The presentation of the Award was held on the 4th March 2002 at the Hotel Mandarin Kuala Lumpur. Fairchild Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd from Penang won the Excellent Award. This is the highest category of the Award and it is the first time that it has been won.

2. ISO 14001 Clinic

As a follow up to the workshops held for SMIs on ISO 14001 BCSDM organized a three-day Clinic for SMIs from 26-28 March 2002 at the Concorde Hotel Shah Alam.

This programme is designed to provide the participants with a systematic approach towards acquiring ISO 14001 certification and to realize the commercial benefits from it.

The Mr Alex Lam of Shell did the presentation.

The participants interacted very well and showed interest in going for the ISO 14001 certification.

3. Golf Tournament

BCSDM organized a Golf & Family Day at the Saujana Impain Golf & Country Resort on the 23rd June 2002.

The cost for a golfer was RM300, which included breakfast, lunch, green fees, buggy and a goodie-bag. Non- golfers and family had to pay RM35 per person, which included breakfast, lunch and a chance to participate in all the games.

Shell Malaysia and Nestle Foods Malaysia sponsored 30 children each from Spastic Centre and Pure Life Society. The children had lots of fun with the clown and the magician and they all went home with some prizes and are looking forward to be invited again next year.

4. BCSDM – Shell Malaysia Scholarships Award

BCSDM and Shell Malaysia awarded four scholarships for “Green” studies in local universities to pursue research and first degree studies in environment related fields.

The scholarship awards presentation was held in June 2002 at Shell House and was officiated by the Minister of Science Technology and the Environment Dato’ Seri Law Hieng Ding who is also the patron of BCSDM.

5. ISO 14001

BCSDM organized another workshop on ISO 14001 for SMIs entitled ‘ Improving Profits of SMIs Through ISO 14001’ on the 21st August 2002 at the Kulim Golf & Country Club, Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

The speakers were:

  1. En Aziz Long, Senior Manager, EMS Certification Unit SIRIM QAS, – ‘Benefits of ISO 14001’
  2. Dato’ Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff , ED BCSDM – ‘Overview of ISO 14001’
  3. Mr. Ong Ewe Lee, Sony –‘Practical Experience of Assisting SMIs to Achieve ISO 14001’
  4. Mr. Michael Ooi, Finance & Admin Manager, San Yong Enterprise, – ‘SMIs Experience with ISO 14001’
  5. En. Fozian Ismai, Manager SMIDEC – ‘Financial Assistance for SMIs’
  6. En Aziz Long, Senior Manager, EMS Certification Unit SIRIM QAS- Briefing on the Hibiscus Award.

There were only 20 participants and they interacted very well and showed interest in going for the ISO 14001 certification.

6. Malam Mesra

Another Fun and Fund Raising Night was held on the 21st September 2002 at the Ballroom Renaissance Hotel KL. The Guest of Honour was the Patron of BCSDM and Minister of Science Technology and Environment YB Datuk Law Hieng Ding. It was a very informal and successful event.

The food was exceptionally good and the entertainment for the night was from the Balle Balle group and our very own Shah, who was the star for the night with his very ‘green’ costume. He kept the audience in stitches and made the event very informal and entertaining.

Five prizes were awarded to the best-dressed males and females in line with the theme, which was ‘Flora & Fauna’. Lots of door prizes and spot prizes were given out to the lucky winners.

Everyone went home with a pot of fern sponsored by Shell Malaysia and at least one prize. BCSDM members sponsored all the prizes.

The event was very successful and we raised a sum of RM51,000.

7. Workshop on “International Markets & Safety, Health & Environmental Standards – Your key Performance Indicator”

A workshop on ‘International Markets & Safety, Health & Environmental Standards – Your Key Performance Indicator’ was held on the 17th December 2002 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

The workshop sought to improve the overall performance in occupational safety, health and environment by providing them guidelines and experience which could be used to:

  1. Minimize risk to employees and damage to the environment.
  2. Improve business performance and
  3. Assist organizations to establish a responsible and a caring corporate image in the society.

The President of BCSDM, Y. Bhg. Dato’ Hj Mizanur Rahman Ghani delivered the welcoming address and the session started with:

  1. A briefing on the Hibiscus Award by Y. Bhg. Dato’ Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff, ED BCSDM.
  2. Puan Hasmah Harun of Golden Ecosystem spoke on ‘EPE-Tool For Finding Out Your Performance’.
  3. En Khairudin Hashim of Golden Hope Plantations Berhad spoke on ‘Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) Implementation at East Estate Palm Oil Mill, Malaysia’.
  4. Mr Chew Seng Choon of Sime Datby Berhad spoke on ‘Environmental Communications’
  5. En Omar Mat Piah of DOSH spoke on ‘Current OSH Challenges In The country’
  6. Mr Chin Fook Kheong of SOCSO spoke on ‘An Overview of The Social Security Schemes under The Employees Social Security Act 1969’.
  7. Mr Rick Ives from Nestle Malaysia spoke on ‘How Management Attitudes Determine The Safety Culture Of An Organisation’.

Y. Bhg. Dato’ Ghazali Dato’ Yusoff and Mr. Chew Seng Choon chaired the sessions. The participants interacted very well and this made the workshop a success.
