1. Dialogue with Bhutan Delegation / Tea Talk

On the 19th March 2004, BCSDM welcomed a 12- member team of Business and Government delegation from Bhutan to a dialogue at the Secretariat. The delegations were visiting Malaysia to learn about sustainable development in Malaysia. They enlightened our members on their country’s economic, business and tourism activities. Members were very impressed by their command of English and they presented BCSDM with a stamp album.

After the dialogue with the Bhutan Delegation, we had another informative talk on Air Pollution Control by Mr. Roland Haas, Chief Technical Advisor, Malaysian – German Technical Cooperation.

2. Workshop For The Media

The Fundraising Sub-Committee of BCSDM organized a workshop for the Media entitled

“BCSDM: The Leading Business Advocate for Sustainable Development in Malaysia – An Introduction to the Media on BCSDM’s Role and Purpose” at Shell House on the 8th April 2004 from 9.00am – 2.00pm. The event was sponsored by Shell Malaysia.

3. SREP Forum & Dialogue

A Small Renewal Energy Programme (SREP) developers Forum & dialogue was organized by BCSDM and supported by MIDA, Suruhanjaya Tenaga & Eco-Partners and endorsed by KTKM & PTM on the 29th April 2004 at MIDA, Plaza Sentral.

The Forum / Dialogue was very well attended. The active discussion with the participants and the panel at the round table dialogue goes to say that this was a successful forum.

The opening remarks were by Y. Bhg. Dato’ Mohd. Annas, Chairman / CEO Suruhanjaya Tenaga. The speakers were:

1. Mr. Kalaiyappan from MIDA who spoke on the ‘Tax Incentive To Generate Energy Using Biomass’.
2. En Jamari Bin Ibrahim from Suruhanjaya Tenaga spoke on ‘EZ Road To SREP License’
3. Mr. Marcus Chee, an individual member of BCSDM spoke on ‘Nanomass or Biomass’
4. En Amir bin Hj Yahaya from DOSH spoke on ‘Equipment Safety’
5. En. Ahmad Zahrin from PTM spoke on ‘Criteria for SREP Success’
6. Y. Bhg. Dato Engku Hashim Al-Edrus, Vice President (Distribution) TNB / Managing Director TNBD spoke on ‘ A REPA Safari’

Dr. Yeoh Bee Gin from SIRIM. Chaired the round table discussion.

As the response was good and the demand is there, we will have a follow up on this programme in August 2004.

4. AGM

The Twelfth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSDM) was held on the 13th May at BP Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Menara Maxis, KLCC. The Executive Committee remained the same and En Iqbal Abdullah from PETRONAS and Mr. Marcus Chee an individual member were co-opted into the committee

After the AGM the President of BCSDM En Zainul Rahim Mohd Zain thanked BP for hosting the AGM and providing a very sumptuous high tea.

5. Malam Mesra
The Publicity / Fund Raising Sub-Committee organized the annual Malam Mesra at the Hyatt Regency Saujana. The event was held at the poolside of the hotel and the theme was “ Blue Marine”. The entertainment was provided by the “Jetliners” and our very own “Sustainables” made up of Dato Ghazali and En. Shaharuddin. The weather was very good and everyone went home with a door gift sponsored by Shell Malaysia. Member companies sponsored all the luck draw prizes and the best dressed male and female in accordance with the theme for the evening were awarded prizes. The event was very successful.

6. Eco Products Exhibition

CSDM participated in the Eco Products Exhibition organized by FMM at the Mid Valley Exhibition center from 2 – 4 September 2004. Dato’ Ghazali represented BCSDM at the event and he presented a paper on “Green Supply Chain” at the seminar. The presentation paper was prepared by Mr. Chew Seng Choon and was very well received.

It was encouraging to see so many visitors at the BCSDM booth enquiring about Sustainable Development.

7. Conference on Energy Effeciency (EE)

The JISE Sub-committee organized a workshop entitled “ Sustainable Energy Conference: Your Ecology, Your Energy, Your Money” at the MIDA Hall, MIDA on the 23rd September 2004. Y. Bhg. Datuk K. Kanukaran, Director General Designate gave the opening remarks and the papers were presented by:

1. Y. Bhg. Datuk Ir Dr. Mohd Annas, Chairman / CEO Suruhanjaya Tenaga – “Government Policy, Initiative for EE Project”
2. Ir Francis X Jacob, Deputy Director, ST – “Financial & Economic Impact of EE Project”
3. Mr. P. Kalaiyappan, Director MIDA – “Tax Incentives on EE”
4. Dr. Nadzri Yahya, Deputy Secretary General, NRE – Malaysia’s Experience on CDM
5. En. Jasmin Idris, Deputy Director PTM – “How to get CDM Credits
6. Mr. Hendrik Ryter Jensen, DANIDA Consultant – “CDM Project Development – Developer’s Perspective”
7. Ir. Adan Yusof Bank Pembangunan –“ Financing CDM Projects”

The closing remarks were by Mr. Marcus Chee. We raised a nett income of RM 2,080 from this event.

8. Workshop – Learning & Leadership in Malaysia

BCSDM and WBCSD jointly organized a workshop on “Learning & Leadership in Malaysia – Mainstreaming Sustainable Development Practices” from 24 – 25 November 2004 at the Shangri-La Hotel KL.

The event was very successful with Ms. Katherine Madden from WBCSD leading the workshop and Mr. Matthias Gelber presenting a paper on BSS5555. Y. Bhg. Datuk Peter Wentworth, CEO

BP Malaysia and Vice President BCSDM delivered the opening remarks and Mr. Singam presented an overview on BCSDM.

9. Workshop – Safety Management – Getting it Right

BCSDM organized a workshop on “Safety Management – Getting It Right” on the 7th December 2004 at the Hyatt Regency Saujana. Papers were presented by:

1. Dr. Zainal Abidin Bin Md Hussain from SOCSO on “ SOCSO’s Perspective on Occupational Safety & Health”
2. En Shahruddin Ahmad from Shell on “ Shell Road Transport Safety Management”
3. En Zariman Zainuddin from NIOSH on “ Role of Supervisors in Accident Prevention”
4. Mr Suret Singh from Road Safety Council on “ Road Safety Measures”
5. Mr. Rick Ives from Nestle Malaysia on “Impact of Long Working Hours & Fatigue on Employee Effectiveness, Health & Safety”
6. ACP Tuan Tun Hisan Bin Dato’ Hj. Tun Hamzah from Traffic Police on “Analysis of Road Safety”

The workshop was very well received.

10. Motor Treasure Hunt

The last event for the year was the Motor Treasure Hunt on the 18th December 2004.This event attracted 26 cars from members and non- members. Y. Bhg. Dato’ Hj. Mizanur Rahman Ghani, Honorary President of BCSDM flagged off the cars at Plaza Damansara at about 8.00am and the event finished at the Perangsang Golf and Country Club at Templer Park with a very sumptuous lunch and entertainment was by the MIDA Band.
