Corporate Policy
BCSDM promotes the recognition of environmental management as among the highest corporate priorities with the formulation, implementation and publishing of corporate policies, programmes and practices on sustainable development as key determinants to achieve this goal.

Environmental Management System
The concept of an Environmental Management System (EMS) together with a model framework, is introduced by BCSDM for all members to implement, recognizing the importance of integrating EMS into business. This is a prerequisite to achieving sustainable development.

Environmental Impact Assessment, Monitoring and Auditing

Business sectors are encouraged to quantify the effect of their activities on the environment through assessment, monitoring and auditing. BCSDM can provide consultancy on EIA project proposals and methodologies for assessment, monitoring and auditing.

Environmental Education
BCSDM is embarking on short and long term environmental education programme to drive the message of sustainable development, mainly through employees, customers and society. These include:

  • The setting up of a library, with articles and literature contributed by business community.
  • The running of courses on major environmental subjects for example EIA studies, resource accounting and pollution control and monitoring.
  • The organization of seminars and conferences individually or jointly with other bodies for example IEM, Global 500 Forum or ENSEARCH and in cooperation with the DOE.
  • The organization of luncheon talks on environment related topics or the sponsorship of an annual Distinguished Speaker event.
  • The publication of BCSDM occasional papers, conference proceedings or books on various environmental related topics.

Demonstrator projects
BCSDM can catalogue and widely publish a series of successful environmentally friendly projects that have been carried out by business sectors in Malaysia, providing information on cost savings/reductions as a result of such projects. These can serve as impetus for others to do the same.

Environmental technology
A databank on clean technologies and environmental management methods, either being put in place in Malaysia or elsewhere, or currently being researched or developed, is being established by BCSDM to assist business. These include energy efficiency services, products, processes and end of pipe treatment.

Legislation and standards
BCSDM represents business sectors by proactively influencing public policy and legislation. Where necessary it will also contribute towards influencing ASEAN and international protocols through associated bodies. It will keep a record of relevant local and international regulations and standards and monitor their developments.

Communication
BCSDM takes an active part in environmental dialogues with the government and inter-governmental organisations. It fosters openness and dialogues with employees, customers, NGOs and institutions, both national and international, to arrive at common grounds for protecting the environment. BCSDM will instill among the community, a high level of interest and knowledge on environmental matters and encourages them to participate in promoting environmentally friendly practice. These will be achieved through educational programmes, nature camps and awareness campaigns.
